Description

These giclées and reproduction images created using the batik medium, seek to show women of color in a serene setting void of tension, going about their ventures in a proud united manner. Each image contains a brief compelling story (see website) regarding their true intent or significance, by the noted contemporary batik master, Henry E. Sumpter, having been raised and nurtured by similar-minded women in South Carolina. He noted they had to face multiple situations that would mentally paralyze their very existence in facing challenging choices if not their having strong faith/foundations. The artist invites the viewer to create their own synopsis or story based on personal experiences. This difficult time-consuming art medium is a labor of love, despite inherent challenges created in its use by the artist over the years. It could be said the women in the paintings are internally focused and full of pride, finding themselves utilizing thoughtful and appropriate actions with relative ease and confidence.
